During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Tata Steel signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a Letter of Intent with the government of Jharkhand, India, to introduce advanced green steel technologies, including EASyMelt and HIsarna. The project, with an estimated investment of 110 billion Indian rupees (approximately US$1.2 billion), aims to build a low-emission, sustainable steel production system, helping Jharkhand strengthen employment, promote industrial upgrading, and develop green manufacturing as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.
According to Tata Steel's long-term strategic plan, the company's board of directors has approved the construction of a 1 million-ton-per-year HIsarna demonstration plant in Jamshedpur. The relevant engineering design and permitting applications have been initiated. HIsarna, a molten reduction ironmaking technology, can directly produce molten iron using iron ore powder and coal in a cyclone furnace. It has previously completed pilot testing in Emeiden, Netherlands.
The Jamshedpur production site, as Tata Steel's core production hub, boasts a comprehensive production capacity layout, including pellets (6 million tons/year), sinter (8 million tons/year), coke (3.4 million tons/year), pig iron (10.5 million tons/year), crude steel (11 million tons/year), and various semi-finished and finished steel products, covering product lines such as hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled coils, long products, galvanized coils, and welded steel pipes.
This collaboration marks a crucial step forward for Tata Steel in the large-scale application of green technologies and provides an important example for the low-carbon transformation of the Indian steel industry.
