Impact toughness is a mechanical index that evaluates the impact resistance of a material under dynamic load. It is usually measured by testing a standard specimen on an impact testing machine and is the ratio of the work consumed to break the specimen to the cross-sectional area of the fracture. Because this value is affected by the size, shape and test temperature of the specimen, the international standard directly adopts the impact absorption energy as a toughness index.
